If you are looking for a wedding reception venue in Charleston, South Carolina that provides a lot of banquet space but isn’t a hotel, you might want to check out Hibernian Society Hall. Built in 1840, this beautiful building features a Greek revival style complete with six massive columns holding up a pediment. It is the only remaining building associated with the Democratic National Convention of 1860 and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973. Today it is home to the Hibernian Society, an Irish benevolent society that was established in 1801.
The venue provides 6,000 square feet of banquet space, including a stage of 600 square feet. The entrance to the hall is absolutely breathtaking; a grand staircase winds up the two-story rotunda to a lovely old-fashioned ballroom. The ballroom has hardwood flooring, tall windows, and a stage. A large and tasteful chandelier hangs at the center of the ceiling, surrounded by four similar but smaller chandeliers. A neutral color palette creates a calming ambiance, but also provides plenty of versatility for bold wedding themes and exotic floral arrangements. The ballroom can accommodate around 250 guests for a comfortable seated dinner, and plenty more for a standing reception.
Parking is not provided by this venue. A limited number of metered spaces are located nearby, but the venue strongly suggests that guests staying in downtown Charleston park at their hotels and use public transportation to get to the hall. One convenient option for guests requiring overnight accommodations is the Mills House Wyndham Grand Hotel, located adjacent to the Hibernian Society Hall.
The Hibernian Society Hall allows reservations for one or both of the floors. Unfortunately, the hall does not provide handicap access, so you will need to take the beautiful but rather large winding staircase into consideration if you plan to invite any disabled guests. The lack of parking accommodations might complicate this issue further.
The Hibernian Society Hall is one of Charleston’s oldest and largest wedding reception venues available today. You will capture beautiful photographs of your wedding both outside and inside the venue, whether you pose beside the elegant iron gates, in front of the stately columns, beneath the impressive rotunda, or while dancing underneath the golden chandeliers of the formal ballroom. Although the hall is available for private receptions, it is not available to the public.
