It’s a fact, Valerie & Co. Photographers love doing out-of-town weddings, but this one was particularly special. Tara and Spencer were married in the same town that Valerie’s Aunt’s family lives, which meant an even more special and love-filled trip to TN for us! The wedding took place in Johnson City, Tennessee, a mountaintop town near the border of North Carolina. Even though it was March and pretty cold outside, you could tell the bride and groom barely felt it. The joy on their faces when they first saw each other was overwhelming!
The beautiful Johnson City wedding was held at Gray United Methodist Church and the reception at Maple Lane Farm. The red barn façade of the venue was the perfect touch for this couple- Tara is an avid horseback rider. With her blue color scheme and rustic feel, the whole wedding felt intimate and personal. An Etsy artist hand designed their wedding cake, and fairy lights added an air of romance. On display at the door was a framed fingerprint tree, which all of the guests had signed with their fingerprints as they walked into the ceremony. Along with the traditional dancing and champagne toasts, there was also group dancing (holding hands), a contest to see who in the room had been married the longest (the winners had 64 years together!), and a newlywed game. When Tara’s grandparents got too tired and found they had to leave early, Tara and Spencer stopped the party and “pre”- created their send off, just so the grandparents could watch. Over all, the day was full of joy and laughter- our favorite kind of weddings!

This venue is ideal for a country-style wedding, but you do not have to go over-the-top with a country theme. You might simply want to introduce a few subtle touches to complement the venue. Popular country-style favors include mini burlap sacks of candy, mini horseshoes, and seed packets. If you plan to have small snacks like candy or nuts at your reception, consider using an old dresser drawer with dividers to display them and allow guests to dish out their treats using metal scoops. Mason jars provide a popular and versatile option for decorating- serve drinks in them, use them as candle holders for your table centerpieces, or make hanging lanterns out of them.
