The Oaks Plantation – Beaufort SC Wedding Venue

The Oaks Plantation – Beaufort SC Wedding Venue

If you are looking for a great wedding venue that provides both indoor and outdoor space in South Carolina, consider The Oaks Plantation. Built circa 1855 by John Jeremiah Theus Pope and Mary Frampton Townsend Pope, this Beaufort venue boasts 2.4 beautiful acres of moss-draped oaks, marshes and inland waterways, complete with a historic plantation house, private dock, and pool. The plantation resides on St. Helena Island, just five miles from the historic district of Beaufort and within close proximity to Hilton Head Island, Savannah and Charleston. The Oaks Plantation is available for both small and large events, for daily as well as weekend rental. Venue rates are based on personalized events, with “grounds only” or “grounds and porches” packages available depending on the details of your event.

The island of St. Helena is best known for its historic connection to the Gullah culture and language. Properly called “Sea Island Creole,” the Gullah language contains many African loanwords as well as grammar and sentence structure influenced by African languages. St. Helena Island is home to Penn Center, one of the nation’s first schools for freed slaves, which was built when the Oaks Plantation house could no longer accommodate the growing student population within its own walls. Penn School was opened in 1862 and has since become a part of the Penn School Historic District.

The Oaks Plantation was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. In addition to the role it played in establishing Penn School, the plantation also became occupied by the Union during the Civil War in 1861. In fact, the plantation house became military headquarters because it was the first plantation to be reached on the island by boat from Beaufort. The plantation house has also served as a hotel for military personnel from Port Royal, superintendents and teachers.

Parking at this venue is off-street, so consider making shuttle arrangements for your wedding event, especially if you have disabled guests. Tours of The Oaks Plantation are by reservation only. Cypress Trees Plantation in Charleston SC

Cypress Trees Plantation in Charleston SC

It’s no secret- old southern weddings are popular right now in Charleston, South Carolina. If you are planning to follow suit, what better venue to have your wedding at than Cypress Trees Plantation? This gorgeous plantation, now a working farm of crops other than cotton, is located on Edisto Island and dates all the way back to the 1700’s. The natural beauty of the property is hard to miss, from the breathtaking marsh views and ancient oaks to the impressive size of the lawn. This venue absolutely glows with historic southern charm.

The plantation offers various event packages for your big day, which include amenities like full lawn access, lighted grounds, a bridal apartment for preparation, full service powder rooms, parking attendants, water and electrical outlets, and a preferred vendors list. Wedding ceremonies and receptions take place outside, and boy do they dazzle a crowd. A porch swing hangs from a thick branch of one of the old oaks, making it a hot spot for photographs. Gorgeous oak trees are absolutely everywhere and really make for an enchanting wedding experience, especially with lanterns hanging from their branches. Say your vows under one of these ancient canopies as your guests look on from rustic branch benches or traditional white chairs. Decorate your reception tent with chalkboard signs and cotton blossoms to enhance the nostalgic experience. A perfect beverage for your guests could be sweet tea in mason jars with a straw and a lemon garnish- you can even offer guests the option to “twist” their tea with a shot or two of alcohol. Offer children and adults alike the option to play croquet during a lull in the reception- the kids will love learning about the classic game and adults will appreciate the excuse to step away from the party for a little while.

Perhaps you are a little put-off from the idea of having your wedding on a property that was made famous by slavery. This is actually a common issue with modern brides, but no cause for alarm. By having your wedding at this historic location, you are not by any means endorsing slavery, as our country was reunited against it long ago. History isn’t something to shy away from- it’s something to embrace and to learn from. What’s more, a gorgeous property like Cypress Trees Plantation should not be neglected simply for what its previous owners chose to do with it. If you want wedding here, then have one!

For more information on the Cypress Trees Plantation, please fill out the contact form at www.cypresstreesplantation.com.
