If you are looking for a beautiful and historic venue for your wedding day, consider the Rhett House Inn. Located in Beaufort, South Carolina, this venue successfully combines old Southern charm with modern urban flair. The inn consists of three buildings- the Thomas Rhett House, the Cottage, and Newcastle House. The Thomas Rhett House is a Greek Revival mansion, built circa 1820 by one of South Carolina’s wealthiest planters and statesmen. The Cottage was built circa 1864 as both a school and store for freed slaves. The Newcastle House is the newest of the three buildings, built by the owners of the inn to provide additional overnight accommodations that have been utilized by celebrities like Tom Hanks, Robert Redford, and Michael O’Keefe. The grounds of the inn are covered in beautiful plantings such as Southern Magnolias, Crape Myrtles, and 300-year-old Live oak trees.
All weddings held at the Rhett House Inn must reserve all 19 guest rooms for a minimum of 2 nights in addition to the $3,500 venue fee. The cost of these rooms ranges from $220 to $450 per night. A stay at the Rhett House Inn includes complimentary glasses of champagne upon arrival, the inn’s famous Southern Breakfast for 2 each morning, refreshments in the afternoon, light hors d’oeuvres each evening, and homemade desserts. Guests also enjoy exclusive access to the Sanctuary Golf Club at Cat Island, located just minutes away. The inn will accommodate up to 150 guests for your reception. Upon reserving the inn for your wedding event, you and your spouse-to-be will receive a complimentary night in the Innkeeper’s Suite, the inn’s most requested and romantic room, for your wedding night.
The Rhett House Inn does not provide wedding planning, catering, or event rental services, but the on-site Event Coordinator will be happy to provide you with a list of wedding planners in the area. If you are looking for a great wedding venue that provides both indoor and outdoor space in South Carolina, consider The Oaks Plantation. Built circa 1855 by John Jeremiah Theus Pope and Mary Frampton Townsend Pope, this Beaufort venue boasts 2.4 beautiful acres of moss-draped oaks, marshes and inland waterways, complete with a historic plantation house, private dock, and pool. The plantation resides on St. Helena Island, just five miles from the historic district of Beaufort and within close proximity to Hilton Head Island, Savannah and Charleston. The Oaks Plantation is available for both small and large events, for daily as well as weekend rental. Venue rates are based on personalized events, with “grounds only” or “grounds and porches” packages available depending on the details of your event.
The island of St. Helena is best known for its historic connection to the Gullah culture and language. Properly called “Sea Island Creole,” the Gullah language contains many African loanwords as well as grammar and sentence structure influenced by African languages. St. Helena Island is home to Penn Center, one of the nation’s first schools for freed slaves, which was built when the Oaks Plantation house could no longer accommodate the growing student population within its own walls. Penn School was opened in 1862 and has since become a part of the Penn School Historic District.
The Oaks Plantation was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. In addition to the role it played in establishing Penn School, the plantation also became occupied by the Union during the Civil War in 1861. In fact, the plantation house became military headquarters because it was the first plantation to be reached on the island by boat from Beaufort. The plantation house has also served as a hotel for military personnel from Port Royal, superintendents and teachers.
Parking at this venue is off-street, so consider making shuttle arrangements for your wedding event, especially if you have disabled guests. Tours of The Oaks Plantation are by reservation only. For more information on this versatile and historic venue, please visit www.theoaksplantationsc.com and fill out the online form. You may also e-mail email@example.com or call 843-441-0100 to speak with someone directly.Read More »

If you wish to have a truly remarkable wedding ceremony that none of your guests are likely to forget, you must consider having it at the Old Sheldon Church Ruins in Beaufort, South Carolina. Imagine having your guests congregate in the shell of a historical church with nothing but the sky above your heads. Add to that stunning picture an aisle of wildflowers and your ceremony is guaranteed to be an enchanting experience.
Back when it was known as the Prince William Parish Church, the Old Sheldon Church held its first service in 1757. It was set on fire during the Revolutionary War and rebuilt in 1826, only 69 years after its conception. Common knowledge claims that the church was burned a second time in 1865 by Sherman’s troops during the “March to the Sea” campaign, and the sign that labels the remains suggests the same. However, a letter dated 1866 suggests the church was destroyed by other means: “Sheldon Church not burn’t. Just torn up in the inside, but can be repaired.” Evidently the church had been gutted after Sherman’s troops set fire to several homes. The victims of the house fires pulled apart the inside of the church for materials to rebuild.
The ruins are now managed by the Parish Church of St. Helena. Members of the church may use the ruins for wedding events for free. Non-members must pay a fee, but active duty service members are entitled to a 50% discount. The Parish Church of St. Helena permits only ordained ministers to officiate weddings at the ruins. Ministers certified online are not permitted. All guest ministers must seek permission from the Rector of the Parish Church before officiating weddings at the ruins.
If you desire to capture inspiring wedding photographs, reserve the Old Sheldon Church Ruins for your Big Day. Your portraits will be ironic as you and your wedding party stand beside a hollow church that time forgot, its old brick walls covered in moss and surrounded by gorgeous Lowcountry foliage. For more information on this gorgeous venue, please contact Bill and Kathy Sammons at 843-379-0016.Read More »

For a truly unique wedding ceremony, consider reserving the Chapel of Ease Ruins in Beaufort, South Carolina. These ruins are all that remain of an old chapel built in the mid-1700s to serve the plantation families of St. Helena Island, who lived too far from Beaufort to regularly attend services there. Now managed by the Parish Church of St. Helena, the ruins provide an enchanting alternative to the typical indoor ceremony- perfect not only for remarkable photographs, but for ambiance as well.
Before the chapel was built, St. Helena’s Church was the primary parish church. In spite of its name, St. Helena’s Church was located in Beaufort, which was much too far away for the people of St. Helena Island at the time. In response to their pleas, the Anglican church built the “chapel of ease.” Early in the Civil War, the U.S. Army gained control of the area and plantation owners were forced to abandon their land. In the process, many slaves were left behind. As a result, they were stuck in legal limbo- they were no longer enslaved by their former owners, but they were also not yet officially free.
Northern missionaries and teachers traveled south, bringing opportunities for education. With help from the federal government, the Port Royal Experiment was born. For the first time ever, slaves were educated and trained to work outside the institution of slavery. It was in 1886 that the Chapel of Ease finally met its demise in a forest fire, and for whatever reason it was never repaired. The site of its remains was added to the National Register of Historic places in 1988.
Members of the Parish Church of St. Helena may reserve the Chapel of Ease Ruins for free. Non-members must pay a fee, but active duty service members receive a 50% discount. Outside officiates are allowed at this venue- however, they must be ordained ministers of the Gospel, and they must first seek permission to officiate from the Rector of the Parish Church.
Enchant your wedding guests with an ironic yet gorgeous site that will happily haunt them for the rest of their lives, not to mention yours. To reserve the Chapel of Ease Ruins for your Big Day, please call Cilla Dukes at 843-524-5960 or Alan Moses at 843-838-5667.Read More »

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church is located on Anson Street in Charleston, South Carolina. Built and established in the 19th century, it was the first place of worship in America where pews were not rented or sold, but available to anyone for free. The modern congregation continues to open its doors to anyone who wishes to be married in this beautiful church.
The outside of the church is deceivingly plain, for the inside is painted in a bright white and the center aisle features a lovely teal carpet. Balconies on either side of the sanctuary are held up by elegant, white columns and the walls are tastefully decorated with beautiful and religious plaques. A hall is available for rehearsal dinners as well as wedding party preparations, but parties are advised to arrive dressed.
St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church has an impression of being rather accommodating, as in addition to allowing anyone to marry here, the congregation also allows couples to reserve the church as late as 30 days prior to the wedding; however, it is highly recommended that couples begin planning for their wedding at least a year in advance. A $100 deposit is required to hold your reservation and the rest of your balance is due 14 days before your Big Day. Members of the church may get married here for free, but non-members will pay $1,900. Additional fees include a minimum honorarium of $750 for non-members, an organist fee of $400 for members and $600 for non-members, and a custodial fee of $90. The church is not open to weddings during Lent. Because the church holds a worship service at 6PM, weddings may not run past 5PM on Saturdays.
Photography of any kind is prohibited during the ceremony. Floral arrangements must be real and not artificial or dyed. Aisle runners are forbidden for liability reasons. Rice and confetti are not allowed, but guests may throw fake rose petals outside the church. Alcohol is also not allowed.
Wedding programs may be purchased for five cents per page if you do not mind black and white, or for eleven cents per page if you prefer color. Parking arrangements at the Gaillard Auditorium Parking Lot on Alexander Street can be made by calling Republic Parking at 843-568-8519. A copy of the church’s wedding policy as well as a calendar of scheduled wedding events is available on the church’s website at www.ststephenscharleston.org/weddings. For more information on this venue, please contact Reverend David Anthony Williams at 843-722-0038.Read More »
